Gov Bago advocates single-term tenure for governors

Published on December 13, 2025 03:49 AM

Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago has called for a single-term tenure for state governors to promote good governance.

Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago of Niger state has supported a single term in office for state governors for good governance. The governor who has spent two years in his first term in office did not however recommend the duration of the single term or the effective year for the take off. Speaking at a stakeholders meeting in Minna, Bago argued that a single term would reduce the pressure on governors to focus on re-election campaigns and allow them to concentrate on delivering democratic dividends to their people. He noted that the current two-term system often leads to governors spending their first term positioning for re-election rather than implementing meaningful policies.
